Therapy involves working together, but your responsibilities are different. You are seeking help from a professional responsible for safe, appropriate and understandable care.
What the therapist is responsible for
They should work within their training and experience, explain recommendations, protect private information, respect agreements and listen to concerns. They should recognise when another service is needed.
They also need to consider problems in the relationship. You do not have to protect them from all difficult feedback or help with their personal problems.
How you can take part
Share what you can, say when an explanation does not fit and try agreed activities when feasible. If you did not complete an exercise, you can explain what made it difficult.
“I wanted to try, but I was exhausted in the evening” is useful information for adapting the plan, not a reason to shame you.
Illness, disability, finances and life circumstances affect participation. These should be considered. Difficulty taking part never justifies humiliation, pressure or exploitation.
