Referral rules can be difficult to follow when you are already struggling. You can start by telling your doctor: “I would like help from a clinical psychologist. What is the next step for me?”
Assessment and ongoing coverage are separate
The procedure effective from 1 September 2026 provides an initial referral for up to three assessment visits for new patients. These visits help establish your needs. For this procedure, a new patient means someone who has not received clinical-psychologist care in the previous twelve months. Ask which route applies if you have already received such care.
Further covered sessions are not automatic. Initial assessment visits count towards the overall allowance, rather than being extra visits. They depend on GeSY requirements, including an eligible diagnosis and the appropriate referral. A relevant diagnosis already documented by a psychiatrist or clinical psychologist follows a different route. Ask your doctor which applies to you.
Understanding the cost
Before booking, confirm that the clinical psychologist participates in GeSY and that this visit is covered. The standard co-payment is €10 per covered visit: your contribution while GeSY pays the remaining covered cost.
Published annual co-payment caps are generally €150, or €75 for specified groups, with possible exemptions. These caps do not limit private-session fees. Confirm the rules for your circumstances.
When covered visits run out
Allowances vary. Before agreeing to private continuation, ask what options remain through GeSY and what private care will cost.
For clarification, contact GeSY on 17000, +357 22 017000 from abroad or [email protected]. You can ask for an explanation of an unclear charge before agreeing.
